If you decide to invest in cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin is obviously still the dominant one. However, in 2017 its share in the crypto-market has quite dramatically fallen from 90 percent to just 40 percent. There are many options currently available, with some coins being privacy-focused, others being less open and decentralized than Bitcoin and some just outright copying it.

If you happen to own a business and if you’re looking for potential new customers, accepting cryptocurrencies as a form of payment may be a solution for you. The interest in cryptocurrencies has never been higher and it’s only going to increase. Along with the growing interest, also grows the number of crypto-ATMs located around the world. Coin ATM Radar currently lists almost 1,800 ATMs in 58 countries.
Cryptocurrency exchanges are websites where you can buy, sell or exchange cryptocurrencies for other digital currency or traditional currency like US dollars or Euro. For those that want to trade professionally and have access to fancy trading tools, you will likely need to use an exchange that requires you to verify your ID and open an account. If you just want to make the occasional, straightforward trade, there are also platforms that you can use that do not require an account.
To increase your buying / selling limits, input all forms of payment possible. Please note, only some banks are supported. Yours might not be. Please note that fees are lower with a bank account, and fees are rather high without one. Given that, you should use your bank account to purchase cryptocurrency directly via Coinbase over other payment methods whenever possible.
Other honorable mentions: Cardano (ADA), Stellar Lumens (XLM), Zero-ex or 0x (ZRX), Tron (TRX), Zcash, EOS, NEO, NEM, Basic Attention Token (BAT), Monero (XMR), and a few others all have decent values, familiarity, and respectable market caps. Some even have better exchange rates currently then our top picks for coins, and who knows, any of these could be a top coin in the future. So, make sure not to dismiss the other forerunners (or even some odd altcoins with interesting code or large user bases are worth keeping an eye on). We could easily see one a given existing altcoin or even a new coin spring up to the top of the list at any moment (for example Verge accomplished this during an altcoin boom in 2017 – 2018). The cryptocurrency market is young and volatile, so anything could happen over time. The past is a good indicator of the future in crypto, but things change and the future is truly any coin’s game.
Decentralized cryptocurrency is produced by the entire cryptocurrency system collectively, at a rate which is defined when the system is created and which is publicly known. In centralized banking and economic systems such as the Federal Reserve System, corporate boards or governments control the supply of currency by printing units of fiat money or demanding additions to digital banking ledgers. In case of decentralized cryptocurrency, companies or governments cannot produce new units, and have not so far provided backing for other firms, banks or corporate entities which hold asset value measured in it. The underlying technical system upon which decentralized cryptocurrencies are based was created by the group or individual known as Satoshi Nakamoto.[23]
