Ethereum: Is probably the third most important coin [here in 2018, I’d argue that it is the second most important after Bitcoin]. Ethereum doesn’t have the longevity at the top like Litecoin, but it has some unique features and a market cap that make it a real contender. Most ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings) use Ethereum. It has a less intimidating cost that Bitcoin and has the second highest market cap. On that note, Ethereum classic is also notable. Ethereum is a spin-off (aka “hard fork”) from what isn’t today called Ethereum classic (like how our next up coin, Bitcoin cash, is a spin-off of Bitcoin.) NOTE: Ethereum is a fork of another relevant coin called Ethereum Classic.

When you look at the whole picture, bitcoin seemingly has Demand being > Supply in the 3k range. Granted we only have two periods now to look at but the ranges are aligned in terms of where there are clear areas of support and resistance.. aswell as those where price simple carves through. A Bitcoin higher high above $4250 would imply a void in volume through...
There is lots of value created by ‘pump- & dumpers’ so watch out! Always set a goal, which you want to achieve, e.g. 2% or 35 USD per day. If you don’t check you exchanges daily, then the best thing you could probably do is add a limit order. A limit order is executed, when a specific price is reached. For example, if you buy Ether for 0.05 BTC. You can make a limit sell order for 0.075 BTC. This means that you will automatically sell your Ether when the value is higher than 0.075 BTC. This assures, that you don’t miss any big price movements- it can always fall back to 0.05 before you can see the profit opportunity.

Dash (originally known as darkcoin) is a more secretive version of bitcoin. Dash offers more anonymity as it works on a decentralized mastercode network that makes transactions almost untraceable. Launched in January 2014, dash experienced an increasing fan following in a short span of time. This cryptocurrency was created and developed by Evan Duffield and can be mined using a CPU or GPU. In March 2015, ‘Darkcoin’ was rebranded to dash, which stands for “digital cash” and operates under the ticker DASH. The rebranding didn't change the functionality of any of its technological features including DarkSend and InstantX. As of February 9, 2019, Dash had a market cap of $640.76 million and a per token value of $74.32.

Pundi X originates in Indonesia, and while cryptocurrency exchanges are permitted, cryptocurrency payments for goods and services are currently banned by the government. Pundi X is able to deploy their hardware without breaking the law because their POS system defaults to accepting payments from non-cryptocurrency systems, like bank cards and Apple Pay.
Monero is the most prominent example of the cryptonite algorithm. This algorithm was invented to add the privacy features Bitcoin is missing. If you use Bitcoin, every transaction is documented in the blockchain and the trail of transactions can be followed. With the introduction of a concept called ring-signatures, the cryptonite algorithm was able to cut through that trail.
Homero Josh Garza, who founded the cryptocurrency startups GAW Miners and ZenMiner in 2014, acknowledged in a plea agreement that the companies were part of a pyramid scheme, and pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2015. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission separately brought a civil enforcement action against Garza, who was eventually ordered to pay a judgment of $9.1 million plus $700,000 in interest. The SEC's complaint stated that Garza, through his companies, had fraudulently sold "investment contracts representing shares in the profits they claimed would be generated" from mining.[70]
Gray Box Ive opened a few short positions in tether, eventually it will probably crash (which I think will precipitate the proper BTC bottom of this cycle) and until then its not going to past its $1 peg, So huge downside and no upside.  Very hard to predict when it will happen other than it will be caused by regulatory action so will probably happen on a weekday. I don't use it as a settlement anymore, its the main reason i only dabble in alts these days(most of my volume is on kraken trading against proper USD/EURO/YEN pairs.- If tether crashes, btc will crash and most exchanges will offer to refuge. Oh it will be fun to watch but horrific for those trapped.
Generally speaking, rich or poor one should focus the top coins by market cap and avoid any coins that haven’t preformed well over the course of years. Any get rich quick sort of gambit and any coin promising returns is something that should be avoided, meanwhile one should approach coins with caution and practice conservative approaches like dollar cost averaging over time to build average positions.
On cryptocurrency mining: As noted, one way to invest in cryptocurrency is via cryptocurrency mining. That is a valid way to start investing if say you love computer gaming and need a new rig and want to invest in small amounts of cryptocurrency while maybe making back some of the cost of the rig (and maybe even breaking even) but that is an entirely different subject. The average investor will want to trade USD for cryptocurrency on an exchange and avoid the complexities and investments of mining. In all cases, unless you already have a good rig with a great graphics card, you’ll need to put down USD upfront anyway.
Every transaction is a file that consists of the sender’s and recipient’s public keys (wallet addresses) and the amount of coins transferred. The transaction also needs to be signed off by the sender with their private key. All of this is just basic cryptography. Eventually, the transaction is broadcasted in the network, but it needs to be confirmed first.
Cryptocurrencies are digital gold. Sound money that is secure from political influence. Money that promises to preserve and increase its value over time. Cryptocurrencies are also a fast and comfortable means of payment with a worldwide scope, and they are private and anonymous enough to serve as a means of payment for black markets and any other outlawed economic activity.
Thomas, some good thoughts on the crypto space. Coincidentally, I share many of your views…top 20, sometimes top 50, with a focus on protocols with huge upside vs just applications, coins/projects with history and adoption with a strong community. Curious which privacy coins you prefer, I like Monero a lot, and haven’t ventured into others, but i think 2018-19 will be a big year for them. Any thoughts on others for consideration? I kinda like ZCash, not sure of Privex, Verge, NAVCoin, any others you know of or like… Thanks, JAS
A cryptocurrency exchange or a digital currency exchange (DCE) is a business that allows customers to trade cryptocurrencies or digital currencies for other assets, such as conventional fiat money or other digital currencies. A cryptocurrency exchange can be a market maker that typically takes the bid-ask spreads as a transaction commission for is service or, as a matching platform, simply charges fees.
It is important investors realize not all exchanges and brokers that offer delivery of the underlying Bitcoin are created equal. Some firms have fallen victim to theft by hackers who have stolen Bitcoin belonging to clients whose money was held at the exchanges. Meanwhile, other Bitcoin exchanges have gone bankrupt (as in the case of Mt. Gox),  as a result of fraud or mismanagement.

As of February 2018, the Chinese Government halted trading of virtual currency, banned initial coin offerings and shut down mining. Some Chinese miners have since relocated to Canada.[32] One company is operating data centers for mining operations at Canadian oil and gas field sites, due to low gas prices.[33] In June 2018, Hydro Quebec proposed to the provincial government to allocate 500 MW to crypto companies for mining.[34] According to a February 2018 report from Fortune,[35] Iceland has become a haven for cryptocurrency miners in part because of its cheap electricity. Prices are contained because nearly all of the country's energy comes from renewable sources, prompting more mining companies to consider opening operations in Iceland. The region's energy company says bitcoin mining is becoming so popular that the country will likely use more electricity to mine coins than power homes in 2018. In October 2018 Russia was to become home to one of the largest legal mining operations in the world, located in Siberia.[citation needed]
